The 2027 MagicCons have been announced - all four of them!
During the 2027 Preview Panel at the the 2026 Amsterdam MagicCon, the 2027 MagicCon locations and dates were announced. To the surprise of many, Wizards of the Coast upped the number of convention each year from three to four with the number of continents where conventions are to be held going up as well, from two to three.
Kicking off 2027 will be MagicCon in Detroit, with it being held from February 26-28.
The convention will be held only a few weeks after the release of Nautica: The Sunken Realm. Of all the announced cons, Detroit has brought the most controversy. Many fans are questioning if a convention held in the middle of winter in the Midwest is a good idea, as previous conventions held in cold months, most notably a MagicCon held in Chicago in January a few years ago, brought many complaints from fans and vendors alike. Many are also wondering why a convention held around an ocean plane is being held in the middle of a continent.
However, Detroit's closeness to Canada and a large convention area have been seen as pluses.
Up next is the convention covering Kamigawa Titanbreach, fittingly held in a first time city, Tokyo, in a first time continent, Asia.
The Tokyo MagicCon is set to be held from May 14-16, 2027, a few weeks before the release of Titanbreach As there is a large contingent of Magic fans and players in Japan, South Korea, and other Asian countries, this site selection has been met with high praise.
The second U.S. convention is set for August 27-29, 2027 in the one constant city throughout the entire history of MagicCons: Las Vegas.
With other western U.S. cities likely to have issues (Los Angeles/Seattle/Bay Area - expensive, San Diego - ComicCon timing, Denver - too isolated. Not to mention airport size, number of hotels, etc.), Las Vegas has proven to be a solid location that draws in the highest number of fans each year. While the featured set is currently unknown because of the 2027 UB releases not coming out yet, Las Vegas was an expected, but most welcome, decision.
Vegas will also likely have the 2028 preview panel, meaning high hype and lots of fans. If they can survive late August Nevada heat.
And finally there is the final convention of the year, returning back to the central European location of Amsterdam.
Held from December 3-5, 2027, the Amsterdam MagicCon will likely be themed around the final UB set of the year, with hype going to the first 2028 set. Amsterdam is seen as a central European location so, banking on the success of the 2026 convention, Amsterdam could become a somewhat permanent convention city like Las Vegas should it prove itself.
With 4 conventions covering large swaths of the globe, 2027 will be an interesting convention year. We will see if 4 conventions are sustainable...as well as where they can go next.
