Waterworld, Kaiju in Kamigawa, and a Return to Zhalfir: The 2027 Amsterdam Preview Panel

A new plane, two returning planes, and a seen-but-not-focused plane are the three new in-universe sets for Magic: The Gathering in 2027.

At the 2026 Amsterdam MagicCon on Friday, Wizards of the Coast unveiled the three 2027 in-universe sets.

Speculation was running high in the weeks leading up to it, with favorites being a new waterworld plane, Segovia, Innistrad, Zhalfir , Shandalar, Ikoria, Kamigawa , Eldraine, Kalldheim, Amonkhet, Bloomburrow, and Alara. And the speculation turned out to be largely correct.

Designers Jackie Jones and Zakeel Gordon first introduced one of the most long-awaited planes - an all underwater plane, which is named Nautica: The Sunken Realm:

As shown in the previews, the set will be merfolk heavy, with many new sea creatures added in and others seen before, like sharkfolk, also being a part of it.

The developers noted many challenges with the set, like how humans and others could visit the plane. It also has the distinction of being the first expansion after the Reality Fracture storyline wraps up.

Nauctis will have a completely different feel to the game too, since it is all underwater. While Magic has tackled things like multiverses, outer space, and other largely unknown areas before, an all aquatic plane will likely bring out a host of new mechanics, creature types, and other card dillemas for players.

The first set of 2027, it will come out on February 5, 2027.

Up next was the one that quickly became the fan favorite plane of the night - Kamigawa Titanbreach:

Kamigawa returns in all its neon glory, but faces a sudden issue when it comes into contact with the Ikoria plane.  Kaiju from Ikoria invade the Japanese style plane, with art showing mechs battling it out with the giant monsters in scenes right out of the Godzilla franchise.

Both planes were due for a comeback, with Kamigawa coming back after five years (Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty came out in 2022) and Ikoria after seven (Ikoria came out in 2020 during COVID).

Titanbreach will be released on June 4, 2027.

Finally there was the final in-universe set of 2027: Zhalfir.

Developers said that there had been quite some time since it was seen in March of the Machine. However, it was only seen and was not the main plane. This is not the case this time, with the plane taking front focus.

The set will be heavily African-themed, taking on an almost Wakanda-like vibe. Many consultants were brought in for Zhalfir, making sure to give it the correct African style, while also making it its own thing for Magic. This goes for everything from clothes to hair styles to creatures.

The final set of 2027, Zhalfir will come out on October 1, 2027.

While a late 2026 Mystery Booster Commander Edition was announced, none of the 2027 Universes Beyond sets were named with all three expected to be revealed throughout the year. Players did, though, get to see a few card previews for the former).

The Magic community seems to believe that X-Men and The Legend of Zelda are currently two of the frontrunners with X-Men being on some recently released  cards in the Marvel buildup hinting at a set for them, and a recent Hasbro agreement pointing to speculation about Zelda being in "linked" to MTG.

More is expected from Amsterdam during the week, including a closer look at other upcoming sets.
