Welcome back to Who Is on Magic Untapped as we explore the lore of characters from throughout the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. I’m Barry White.
As Magic: The Gathering prepares to revisit the plane of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor for the first time in nearly two decades, we thought it appropriate to revisit one of the setting’s characters. In this video, we’ll discuss the Queen of the Fae, Oona.

Oona, essentially the progenitor of all faerie kind on Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, is comprise of thousands of petals that are forever budding tiny faeries into the air around her.
Shortly before the story of Lorwyn began, she had come to learn of a world-changing event known as the Great Aurora. Fearing the change that was to come, she used her magic to take advantage of an elf of the Moursong people named Maralen right at the moment of her untimely death. This magic made a duplicate of Maralen that acted as an avatar for Oona in which she could store her memories in order to ensure her rule over the forces of Lorwyn after the Aurora’s coming.
In an attempt to better keep an eye on things, she also spied on the goings-on of Colfinor, an ancient yew treefolk who had plans of his own with the Aurora’s coming that could disrupt her control over the realm. Unfortunately for Oona, her avatar, Maralen, had gained self-awareness and refused to work on the fae queen’s behalf.
To better keep an eye on her, Oona dispatched a trio of faeries known as the Vendilion Clique to befriend and spy on Maralen, the Clique relaying all relevant information back to the her.
As the Great Aurora came to pass and the bright world of Lorwyn morphed into the dark, twisted world of Shadowmoor, Oona strengthened her efforts to subdue her.
First, she attempted to take the elemental power of her one-time acquaintance, Ashing, but was thwarted by Maralen with help from the kithkin archer, Brigid Baeli, and the merfolk, Sygg. When that didn’t work, she went to Cayr Ulios, the safehold of the Wilt Leaf elves and took control of its king and queen, syphoning their power to increase her own. These efforts, too, were thwarted – this time by the Wilt Leaf elf Gryffid who sacrificed himself to sever Oona’s connection to the elven monarchs.
Oona then created a facsimile of Maralen and used it to taunt the elven avatar. The two combat one another as Oona slips back into her home area of Glen Elendra, allowing Merelen’s friends Rhys, Ashling, and Colfenor’s sapling in after her.
The group sacrifice the sapling and combine their collective power, defeating Oona in her own realm. Maralen then took her place as Queen of the Fae as the light of day soon began to break over the plane once more.

As for what happened to Oona after her demise, while her body may have been destroyed her consciousness remained. She created a new troupe of faeries to replace the Vendilion Clique with the intent to become whole once more.
And, who knows, maybe with the release of Lorwyn Eclipsed in January 2026, we’ll see whether or not her plan came to fruition.
