Magic: The Gathering Senior Designer Gavin Verhey chats with Magic Untapped about the upcoming set, Time Spiral Remastered.

Comprised of select cards from Magic: The Gathering's Time Spiral block from 2006/2007, the set consists of not only hand-selected cards from Time Spiral, Planar Chaos, and Future Sight, but also a selection of Modern-legal cards.  While the Time Spiral block cards will be printed in the current card frame, the selection of Modern-legal cards will be printed in the "old school" card frame that was phased out after Scourge was released in May of 2003.

"We took cards that had never appeared in the Magic card frame and we put them in that frame and put them in the set," explains Magic: The Gathering senior designer Gavin Verhey.

The move is reminiscent of the original Time Spiral set, which featured a bonus subset of "Timeshifted" reprint cards in the original card frame from Magic: The Gathering's past such as Gemstone Mine, Darkness, Giant Oyster, and Squire.  This time around, however, Verhey says they tried to pay better attention to the cards being included.

"This time around with Time Spiral Remastered, we wanted to do that -- where we could capture a wide range of feelings... we did know that, maybe, this is our one shot to making 121 cards in the old card frame," comments the senior Magic designer.  "So we didn't want a ton of misses because if this is our one shot we should try to do it right."

While Remastered will feature a new assortment of Timeshifted cards, it will not include the special colorshifted and futureshifted card frames found on the likes of Harmonize and Tarmogoyf.  That doesn't mean, though, that those cards didn't make the cut.

"Those show up in the set, they don't use the original borders -- they use the current model," says Verhey.  "Everything that's from Time Spiral [Remastered] use the current border, and it's just those 121 Timeshifted cards."

As for future "Remastered" sets coming out in paper form, Verhey says, "I think it's worth saying that this set exists because of [the players]."

If the set sells well and Wizards of the Coast gets good feedback about it, the printing of new "Remastered" sets will be a possibility in the future.

"I would love to do them at a decent regularity," states Verhey.  "It feels like a thing where we can create and get out there to the public things that allow people to play with fan-favorite sets like Innistrad or Rise of the Eldrazi... but also Invasion is one.  There's a lot of ones that, I think, can be discussed."
