The Hobbit -- A look at MTG's return to Middle-Earth

Magic: The Gathering is returning to Middle-Earth as The Hobbit is set to release for the venerable collectible card game on Aug. 14.

Wizards of the Coast is taking players back to Middle-Earth where they can experience J.R.R. Tolkien's timeless tale's grand beginning.  The set follows the adventure starting out from The Shire with Bilbo, Gandalf, and their company of Dwarves as they pursue fortune, though that fortune is protected by the dreadful Dragon Smaug.  Players will amass and recruit their armies in the shadow of The Lonely Mountain, then battle it out to claim the treasures of Erebor.

In making The Hobbit for Magic, the company decided to focus on the original source material (the second edition of Tolkien's novel) rather than any sort of adaptations such as the 2012 film series directed by Peter Jackson, though

"I will say I am a big fan of the original animated one," says set lead Annie Sardelis.  "They're singing all the time in that...and we'd be remiss if we didn't have them singing all the time -- even though that's really hard to express on Magic cards."

"Definitely sagas help out with that, for sure," adds Magic senior executive producer Mike Turian.

When it comes to making the two sets feel different from one another, the development and design teams leaned into the more fun elements of The Hobbit to make it stand out compared to the epic that is The Lord of the Rings.

"We certainly leaned into the more child fantasy aspects of it -- more whimsical things that kind of make this a little bit more of an adventure and less so a quest," explains creative set lead Nick Marcantel.

To that end, the folks behind adapting The Hobbit into a Magic set thinks it might be a bit more beginner friendly than The Lord of the Rings, which was a direct-to-modern release, was.

"[We] definitely tried to emphasize...the charm and the tone of the world, like there's parts where [the book's] just listing off every animal that lived on Beorn's farm and I'm like alright, here we go, let's make some giant bees and bears and dogs," tells Sardelis.  "And the choice of mechanics like adventure as a returning mechanic tells a story, so it's pretty easy to play with and follow because of its resonance."

In terms of power level, players can expect something that is more-or-less on par with other recent Magic releases.

"We're designing this set to be part of Standard...and once that is the case, then it's about all the goals we have for Standard in creating a healthy environment and balancing play for that," explains Turian.  "And, of course, recognizing that we have an ever-growing Commander audience.  Great.  How do we connect and play with some cards for that."

The Hobbit is already available for preorder with the following products available:

There are no Commander Decks being released for the set.
