MTG x Final Fantasy product details unveiled

Wizards of the Coast lets layers as to what products they can expect with the upcoming Final Fantasy Universes Beyond set.

When it comes to different FFxMTG products, there are is a nice variety from which to choose.

First up are Play Boosters (something that was absent from previous Universes Beyond releases such as Fallout and Doctor Who) as well as The Lord of the Rings, mainly because (for the latter) they didn't exist at the time..

"Play Boosters have something for everyone," says WotC.  "A full display of Play Boosters supports one pod of eight players at a Draft event, with a few left over to use as prize support."

Play Boosters (MSRP $6.99 per pack) contain 14 cards.  1-4 cards are of rarity rare of higher.  There are 4-6 uncommon cards per pack as well as 6-9 common cards.  There's also one land card card per pack (traditional Foil Land replaces a land in 20% of boosters).  Finally, each pack contains one card of any rarity that is traditional Foil.  A foil borderless mythic rare appears in 1 percent of boosters, according to WotC.

Beyond that are Collector Boosters, something that was available for Fallout and Doctor Who as well as The Lord of the Rings.

Says WotC: "Collector Boosters capture the full glory of the expansive Final Fantasy universe, from iconic characters to sweeping settings. Plus, each booster is packed with breathtaking card treatments that add special flair to any collection."

Containing 15 cards per pack at a MSPR of $37.99 (that's roughly $2.50 per card), Collector Boosters consist of 8-12 cards that are traditional foil with anywhere from 0-3 of those cards being "Surge Foil;" 5-6 cards rarity rare or higher, 3-6 uncommon cards, 3-5 common cards, and a land card.  Furthermore, Collector Booster exclusive print treatment will be found in less than 1% of all language Collector Boosters.  They will also contain serialized cards that will be found in fewer than <0.1% of English language Collector Booster packs.

Moving on, there will be both a normal Bundle as well as a Gift Bundle available.

The normal Bundle ($69.99 MSPR) includes nice Play Boosters, as well as a pair of extended art cards and other goodies.

"The Bundle is a great gift for Magic superfans and newcomers alike who visit your store," WotC tells local game stores.  "They contain a little bit of everything to get a player's collection off the ground, plus an oversized Spindown life counter themed after the set."

As for the Gift Bundle (MSRP $89.99), it differs slightly from the normal bundle thanks to the inclusion of a Collector Booster.  It is not yet known if the extended art cards or any of the other goodies are any different (aside from the spindown life counter die).

Says WotC: "The Gift Bundle is the ultimate fan kit, whether your players are boosting their own collection or giving the gift of Magic to another.  With extended-art foil promos, a Collector Booster, and an exclusive Spindown life counter themed after the set, the Gift Bundle gives players a taste of the world of Final Fantasy."

A two player Starter Kit has also been announced.  Themed around Final Fantasy VII and consisting of two 60-card ready-to-play decks, the company sees it as a good entry point for Final Fantasy fans to get into the collectible card game.

"For players who want to play Cloud, Planet's Champion or Sephiroth, Planet's Heir decks, direct them to the Starter Kit.  With two ready-to-play, 60-card decks, the Starter Kit helps guide new players through their first game of Magic while allowing them to explore characters and moments from various Final Fantasy games."

Looking beyond the Standard-legal set, there are also four Commander decks.  Each deck is based around a different core edition of the game: Final Fantasy VIVIIX, and FIV.

The decks are each ready-to-play out of the deck with 100 cards apiece and are feature a chocabo as their set symbol.

"With brand-new art for reprints and 25 new-to-Magic cards in each deck, Final Fantasy fans can experience the games featured for each deck in a whole new way," says the company.

The decks will be available in normal ($69.99) and Collector Edition ($149.99).

Of course, MTG players should probably expect various Secret Lair releases as well as other possible promotional cards and limited-edition treatments and releases beyond what's already been announced by Wizards of the Coast.
