Mark Rosewater talks Ravnica Guild Philosophies

WOTC

Magic: The Gathering Head Designer, Mark Rosewater, explains all about the guilds of Ravnica.

As many Magic: The Gathering players are likely aware, the plane of Ravnica is comprised of ten guilds -- one for each of Magic's two color pairs: W/B Orzhov, W/R Boros, W/G Selesnya, W/U Azorius, B/R Rakdos, B/U Dimir, B/G Golgari, R/U Izzet, R/G Gruul, and G/U Simic.

Seeing as each color has its own characteristics, philosophies, and emphasis, Ravnica's guilds provided Wizards of the Coast an opportunity to really provide the same sort of structure and uniqueness to each of the game's two-color factions.  In fact, things can get rather interesting when you take these single-color philosophies and blend them together.

"Just as each color has an identity, each color pair has an identity," says Magic: The Gathering senior designer Mark Rosewater.  "And I loved the idea that [the original Ravnica block] could educate the audience on two color philosophies."
