Ultra Pro at MagicCon Las Vegas: A preview

Ultra Pro will be at MagicCon Las Vegas showcasing a number of new and limited-run products, including a special playmat benefitting the MagiKids charity.

In addition to the usual assortment of Magic: The Gathering game accessories such as sleeves, binders, and tokens, Ultra Pro has a roster of four playmats and one card binder that will be available exclusively at the convention, which will be held Oct. 25-27 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

First up, and with a limited run of only 150, is the MagiKids Charity Holofoil Valley Questcaller playmat.

The shimmery playmat, which will sell for $30, features artwork from the Valley Questcaller card from Bloomburrow.

As for how much money from each playmat the charity will receive, Ultra Pro Senior Product Manager, Dekan Wheeler, says it's going to be a good percentage.

"Everything after the operating and material costs...70 to 80 percent," he says.

This partnership between Ultra Pro and MagiKids is one that Wheeler has a keen interest in.

"I have a daughter myself, so anything that helps anyone not only get into a hobby that's fun, but [helping them] with the day-to-day, which I know MagiKids is a big part of as well is exactly what I'm a big part of," he comments.

INTERVIEW: ULTRA PRO AT MAGICCON LAS VEGAS

The next limited-run MagicCon Las Vegas exclusive item ties into the recently released set, Duskmourn: House of Horror.

It's a spot glow-in-the-dark playmat featuring the showcase artwork from the card Come Back Wrong.

Ultra Pro will be selling this playmay for $75.  It's limited to 1,000 units.

The playmat is UV-reactive and features glow-in-the dark material on the figure's headband, eyes, and teeth.

"This one's a real fun one," states Wheeler.  "We had a lot of fun figuring this one out.  This is the big one that we're revealing and showing off [at MagicCon]."

Wheeler says that, while the company expects to sell out of the playmat during the convention, they are likely to limit the number of sales per day so that everybody who attends -- whether on an all-weekend pass or a single day pass -- can have an opportunity to pick one up.

A third MagicCon Las Vegas 2024 playmat is the Secret Lair Showdown Murktide Regent playmat.

Featuring the company's shimmery Holofoil treatment, the playmat features artwork from the Secret Lair Showdown Murktide Regent card.

"For those that missed out at [MagicCon] Chicago, the Murktide is still here," explains Wheeler.  "We have 500 for the show at $45 each."

Wheeler points out that it is almost exactly the same playmat as was available during MagicCon Chicago with the only difference being the MagicCon Las Vegas 2024 logo in the lower-left corner.

Finally, Ultra Pro will also be featuring one other limited-run playmat that's paired with a matching card binder.

Limited to a run of 500 and selling for $75 is the Spot Foil Secret Lair Showdown Dark Ritual playmat.

Featuring artwork by Wizard of Barge, the playmat has metallic silver accents on the illustration's skulls.

"This is exactly the same piece that we did for [MagicCon] Chicago as well, but, again, updating this to the [MagicCon Las Vegas] date as well," Wheeler says.  "So, if you did not get it in Chicago, it's the same piece of art with the same spot foiling."

"Not only are we doing that," he continues, "but we are continuing to do the binder as well with the same spot foil treatment."

The matching playmat is being limited to 200 units and will sell for $45.

As for Wheeler, whether or not Magic players decide to pick up one of these con-exclusive items, it's really just about meeting players and enjoying the experience.

"Just come on by and have fun," he exclaims.  "We're here to have fun with you guys, too.  That's why we're here."

As for where on the expo hall floor Ultra Pro's booth will be, Wheeler says they should be near the Artists' Alley.
